Secure Delete – CCleaner

20/08/2012

One of the best secure delete products is “CCleaner”.  It can be added to your Recycle bin to secure delete old files.

What does it do?

  • CCleaner removes lots of “hidden” caches that may risk your privacy
  • It’s free
  • It has an easy to use windows interface – runs on Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit)
  • It can wipe “slack” space – the space between space, within your file structure (a favourite haunt of forensics teams looking for fragments of digital evidence).
  • It will free significant amounts of disk space for you.

Where can I download it?

Default setting starts with:

  • Cleaner > Windows > Run Cleaner
  • Cleaner > Applications > Run Cleaner

Next we can secure delete your free space on the hard drive (takes several hours, but a good security feature)

Tools > Drive Wiper

  • Free Space (default drop down box) or Entire drive (if you’re reselling your laptop)
  • Security – Overwrite (3 passes)

Information on Overwriting.

Deleted Data can often be recovered, after a single overwrite.  So the defaults on CCleaner are 3 overwrites.   Military spec (7 passes).  Gutmann is 35 passes, and that’s far too slow, but you would use Gutmann’s if you’re holding nuclear blueprints and Top Secret Material.

Options > Settings

  • Tick Run CCleaner to recycle bin
  • Right click on the Recycle bin – and CCleaner will run a secure delete on its contents for you.

Have fun, and be safe.

  1. Just for the record, it is CCleaner, not CC Cleaner.

    • Thanks for this, I’ve been wiping free space all day, and still hadn’t noticed the typo. I owe you. :)

      • Not a problem. Just thought it be better for SEO if it was spelled correctly.

  2. Yay teamwork!! If you’ve got any suggestions on good privacy tools, just let me know, and I’ll add them.
Or if you come across the PGP version hacked by the Cyber Knights Templar, I’d be very grateful :) It encrypts with a 16k key…which can withstand even Quantum Computing. I’m stunned to even find that it existed… Now that must be one stunning piece of work. :)

I have used CCleaner for years, this is one of the very few programs that actualy does what it says, it cleans, you may runn it op to 7times overwrith or single ower write as I have it on.
And iit realy works, you may be stunned to witness this and you Firefox will be like a rocket again.

It does not take paswords and so on, but make sure you read the list on what you clean before you do, but overall, a very good program.

And the adress, filehippo is old and have been ther since I used it for the first time, several years ago, atlest, a decade.

If you have problems with Whatreallyhappened or other similare sites, make sure you have sett the Startpage(firefox as an ex) on emty, do not have anything Googlish, I never use a startpage.

    peace

    • Hi Mikael,

The other download address, puts adverts into the browser, so I side stepped them.
The best thing about CCleaner is that Military level “secure deletion” is given to the ordinary person.
When you resell a computer – you don’t want your bank or medical details being sold as well. Windows have no justification for not offering “Secure Deletion” in their Operating Systems.

      Take care.

  4. It’s going to be finish of mine day, however before end I am reading this great piece of writing to increase my knowledge.

on this subject? I’d be very grateful if you could elaborate a little bbit more.
