Duckduckgo.com – Search engine – Privacy Tactic

06/09/2012

Search engines today record your IP address, along with all your search data. They store this data forever, and sell it to advertisers.  If the police, tax authorities or benefit agencies are interested in your data, they sell it – Gmail allegedly charges $25 for each email account.

How to prevent tracking?

Use search engines that do not store your data, these are http://www.startpage.com  and  http://www.duckduckgo.com.  Both offer HTTPS encrypted connections to prevent your ISP seeing your search terms.

Illustrated tracking guide.

Duckduckgo have an illustrated tracking guide, which shows how Google track you and use your data to sell on to others (who may not be friendly.. ie Tax and Excise).

In conclusion:

  • DO NOT USE GOOGLE AS A SEARCH ENGINE – WITHOUT A PROXY BETWEEN YOU.
  • Use Startpage.com (audited by 3rd parties to verify your data is not kept in server logs)
  • or use Duckduckgo.com
