VPNBOOK – Free VPN – How to set up a VPN on Windows 7

09/11/2012

If you’d like to try out a VPN, that’s totally free, VPN Book is a good choice to begin with.  The IP runs from Romania, which as a country does not require logging of IP connections, or you to register for a VPN.  That’s right.  No registration and no logging.

http://www.vpnbook.com/

VPN Username and Password – we’ll use the PPTP option

vpn pass 20th may

Windows 7 –  Setup.

The easiest way to set up a VPN is via PPTP  on windows.

Step 1

1) Go to the control panel and open the “Network and Sharing center”. From here, select “Set up a new connection or network”.

Step 2

2) In the new window select the “Connect to a workplace” link.

Step 3

3) In the new window select “Use my Internet connection (VPN)”.

Step 4

4) In the Internet address box you may enter either the IP or web address of your VPN server ie

euro1.vpnbook.com

Click “Next”.

Step 5

5) In the new window enter the username and password.

Username = vpnbook

Password = rac3vat9

Tick the “Remember this password”. Click “Create”.

Step 6

6) You can either connect now or close the connection wizard.

Step 7

7) From the Control Panel navigate to Network and Sharing Center. Select your new connection.

Step 8

8) You can also connect from the Network and Connection icon in your system tray (bottom right hand corner, by your clock).

Simply left click on it (it looks like a monitor with a cable up the left side) or if wifi, then a barchart.   Right click on your connection and select “Properties” or “Connect” to connect straight away.

Under properties, there are 5 tabs (General, Options, Security, Networking and Sharing).

If you selected “Connect”, You should now connect to VPN Book.

To Test the IP has changed to VPNBook’s server

or

http://www.whatismyip.com/

Thanks it!  You’re now running on a foreign IP – Romanian to be precise.  Over a VPN – so not even your ISP can see what you’re reading.

I love the flag shown with DNSLeakTest.com:

Using AES 256 encryption – which is the Cisco recommended level of encryption, as it’s unbreakable by the code breakers.

FoxyVPN offer the best visual VPN tutorials (steps 1 to 7).  So if you use Vista, Linux, Mac, you might want to check them out.

VPNBook are great to introduce you to using a VPN, if you’ve lacked the know how or confidence to try it.

* Free

* Unlimited Bandwidth

* No Registration

* No server Logging

* AES 256 Encryption.

Next week:

I’ll cover OpenVPN – on Port 53 – for faster performance.  OpenVPN on Port 53 is the preferred method, as not even the great firewall of China can block it.  If a government decides to block PPTP, then you’d lose protection.  So next week, we’ll give you the bulletproof method – that no ISP or Government can block – and all this is for free.  Whichever VPN provider you use the two underlying protocols are the same, you’ll use PPTP (Windows) or OpenVPN (unstoppable).

    hi is there any way that i can use pptp and configure it to run on udp port 53? rather than the default 1723 ??

    Safer and easier to Openvpn with AES-256 running on UDP through any secure ports. PPTP in short is just using at your own risk which can easily be crack.

    • Hi Nada,

      Checked them out for you.
      They offer PPTP – which is weak. Look for a company that offers Openvpn – which is more robust.

      If the VPN works for you, that’s fine, but be aware the middle eastern governments can breach this VPN security. If you’re just reading Facebook, I don’t think anyone will bother. However, if the material is sensitive, then go with OpenVPN.

      Thanks for commenting 🙂

  4. Hi VPN,

    Windows is known to be lazy, and goes to the default ISP, rather than the VPN.

    You can try to manually flush the cache, but there’s no guarantees I’m afraid.
    https://www.dnsleaktest.com/how-to-fix-a-dns-leak.php
    Open a command prompt, with admin rights, and enter:

    ipconfig /flushdns

    Hope that helps. 🙂

    • Hi Imi,

      Can you have a look through the error logs.
      Anything that says “timeout – 60 seconds”. Openvpn needs the secret keys exchange in 60 seconds or it closes the connection for your safety. Something like that, is what I’d hope to see. If both services are failing, then it’s not them, it’s a connection issue local to you. Can you try TCP port 80 rather than UDP. Many colleges etc block the UDP ports – but you should still be able to connect on TCP port 80, as that’s web services. Let me know 🙂

      • Hi Redha,

        I’m hoping this is a really easy solution for this. It looks like you’re not running openVPN with admin rights.

        Start > all programs > openvpn Icon
        Right click on your openVPN icon…. select the last option = properties
        Compatibility Tab
        Down at the bottom ….. Privilege Level = Tick the box to RUN this as an administrator
        That’s it… and away you go 🙂

        OpenVPN needs admin rights in order to create the routing tables…. it sets up a “virtual network adapter”… and needs admin rights to do this. Each OpenVPN tunnel uses 4 network adapters – 2 are real, 2 are virtual. This gives it extra security.

        Come back to me, if that doesn’t immediately fix things for you.

    • Hi Imi,

      What I also wanted to say, was that you’re connecting on UDP, but the keys coming back are not matching up to the secret keys expected by OpenVPN.

      Until we sort this out, don’t use UDP, use TCP – which is a connection orientated protocol. It will resend lost packets and keep a track of things for you. UDP just throws them over, and doesn’t track them. Therefore still only to TCP on port 80 or port 443 for now. And see what errors that throws up. But the secret keys don’t match up on your UDP log… so the packets are getting corrupted. TCP might fix things for you… as it’s like a traffic cop.

      Let me know. 🙂

    Bro now adays freevpn takes a hell lot of time to connect,sometimes more than half an hour..is there a way to make it connect a lil more faster …..bro pls reply asap!!!!

    Like

    • Hi Asif,

      That sounds like there’s network instability between yourself and freevpn. OpenVPN allows 60 seconds to connect… if a response or “handshake” which exchanges secret keys does not take place it terminates the connection to protect you.

      Plan b might be to try VPNbook and see if their connections are more stable for you.

      plan c is to cut and paste some of the error log for me to see if I can tell what’s going on.
      right click on your openvpn icon > VIEW LOG.
      Cut and paste some of the errors for me. It maybe something along the lines of “time out over 60 seconds”.. that is the networks connecting you, rather than freevpn servers.

      let me know 🙂

    I must be missing something. What if you need to connect to something that uses both protocols. TCP and UDP. There is a game I connect to that needs both protocols to be able to log in. I want to use OpenVPN to connect to this game but it it won’t allow me because with VPNBook you can only connect to one or the other protocol. I can with HotSpotShield but don’t want to use HotSpotShield for reasons. Can anyone shed some light on this or is there another free VPN option to use with OpenVPN that uses TCP and UDP connections at the same time?

    Like

    • Hi Brian,

      These two protocols are totally different….
      TCP is “connection orientated”, that is it has sequence numbers and will keep retransmitting until the packet is delivered. It’s ideal for email – when all packets must arrived and be sorted in order.

      UDP is “connectionless”, it fires off the packet, and doesn’t careless whether the packet arrives or not. It’s ideal for VOIP and video, where you don’t stop.

      The systems are mutually exclusive.
      One is DHL or UPS – which is tracked and you can follow the tracking to delivery.. and the keep retrying to deliver. And the other is a paperboy – who throws the newspaper at you..if the dog eats it, or the paper goes next door, who cares.. he’s late for school so isn’t going to do anything about it. They are totally different in nature. You can have one or the other but not both.

      OpenVPN allows UDP and TCP – but not both at the same time.

      I hope that helps explain the differences between the two.

    • Le serveur crée les fichiers de configuration – ceux-ci sont préréglés avec le protocole (TCP / UDP) et le port (53 ou 443).
      Vous ne pouvez pas modifier les ports à partir des fichiers de configuration de client.
      Le serveur délivre les certificats pour un port prédéfini par exemple le port UDP 53 – et aucun autre port ne sera acceptée.
      Je espère que ce est logique – que je suis en utilisant Google translate pour vous répondre.

    • Hi Arie,

      Error 800 applies to all operating systems and means that you are unable to reach the VPN server.

      However, this does not tell us WHY you can’t reach the VPN Server.

      Can you run a cmd prompt – and try to ping the OpenVPN server that you want to use?
      I’m guessing that you will not reach the server – and the pings will time out on you.

      Test 2 is to run tracert IP of the VPN server – this tells you how far you’re getting towards reaching VPNBook.

      ***
      UPDATE – just tested vpnbook.com and their server is timing out.. it’s totally dead.

      It seems the guys are doing some upgrades… as there’s no response at all… so give them over the new year to finish whatever upgrades or maintenance they’re doing.

      Happy New Year!

      I’m making the assumption that you’re using VPNbook here. If that’s correct, then download their Euro 1 or Euro 2. Only Euro sites will allow utorrent. All US exit nodes will be blocked for you… go for European certificates *only*. Hope that helps.
