Hashcat Video

Discussion of hashing using Hashcat on graphics cards.

How to choose a password

  1. Passwords of 8 or less can be bruteforced.  You must use a longer password.
  2. Hackers will not bruteforce longer passwords (eg 9-10 characters), but they will use a dictionary attack or rules to attack them.
  3. We could combine several words together to stop a dictionary attack.  For example, select 3 words that are not commonly used – and have 1 word that is “odd”.
  4.  Stick a symbol into the password to make it stronger.
  5. Use a password manager – with a master password that is very strong.
  6. Never ever reuse the same password on various site.  This limits the damage if a website database is hacked.
